Ms. Janis Klein-Young
Visual Arts
Ms. Klein-Young taught Visual Arts for 36 years in Miami-Dade County Public Schools and served as an adjunct professor for Miami-Dade College. She manages ArtSouth, a non-profit arts center that provides cultural experiences and out-of-school programs for families living in disadvantaged neighborhoods. She is the 2001 Miami-Dade County Public School’s Visual Arts Teacher of the Year and the 2002 Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year. While teaching for Miami-Dade County Public Schools she founded an arts-based service learning program for youth offenders. The program won numerous prestigious honors and earned over a million dollars in grant awards. Ms. Klein-Young has presented her service learning program, a national model, at educational conferences throughout the United States and trained thousands of teachers to replicate her teaching approach. She is the co-author of the book, “My Art, My World” and is featured in “Boys and Girls Learn Differently,” “Human Behavior and Social Environments” and “Remaking America’s Schools for the Twenty-First Century.” Her work is the subject of several newspaper articles, magazine stories and television news features. In 2010 Ms. Klein-Young was awarded the National Spirit of Service Award from Learn and serve America.
